Day 7: Timpanogos Cave NM, Utah

Timpanogos Cave National Monument is situated in American Fork Canyon about 40 miles south of Salt Lake City. We arrived at the ranger's station just before 3:00, where I left Mr. B (who is not a fan of heights) to keep the dogs company while I took a three-hour tour.

The hike was paved(!) and went through a couple manmade arches. It was just challenging enough with vista points along the way. It was so beautiful, I only missed Mr. B a little. lol.

The view from the entrance looked out toward the cities in the Utah valley. And here I am, a little asthmatic, but excited for the tour.

The caves are AWESOME. My pictures do not do the them justice.

The largest stalactite, the Heart of Timpanogos, is estimated at 4000 lbs. There's a great tale associated with the heart. These caves had it all: stalactites, stalagmites, draperies (aka "cave bacon"), flowstone, and helictites (growth dictated by capillary action!). They were truly something to behold and highly recommended.

While I was hiking, Mr. B took some great pics in the river valley. Here's two nice examples of his handiwork.

All in all, another lovely day on the road.

Until next time.

  1. Wow, the caves look amazing. I can't imagine what they would be like in person. All the fall colors in the trees in picutre Mr. B took are beautiful. Nicely done!
